700 Litre General Purpose Spill Kit

The absorbent components of general purpose spill kits are made from our exclusive 100% organic absorbent and Spill Secure polypropylene micro fibres. These materials have excellent absorption rates and provide great value for money. They are designed for general workshop and factory applications.

Spill kits are comprised of various pieces of spill control items to contain, absorb and safely hold contaminated materials, ready for disposal.

Each general purpose spill kit contains absorbent booms, absorbent pads, loose absorbent floor sweep and contaminated waste bags. This spill kit also contains basic instructions and PPE all packed in a readily identified and clearly labelled lime green mobile bin that meets the requirements of the AusSpill product quality guidelines.

Spill kit can be easily moved to the site of the spill and the spill response components quickly deployed to minimise damage to people, property and the environment.

As well as minimising harm to the environment, this spill control kit ensures that you are meeting your work health and safety legal obligations. Section 357 of the Work Health and Safety Regulations states:

Subdivision 2 Spills and damage
357 Containing and managing spills
(1) A person conducting a business or undertaking at a workplace must ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that where there is a risk from a spill or leak of a hazardous chemical in a solid or liquid form, provision is made in each part of the workplace where the hazardous chemical is used, handled, generated or stored for a spill containment system that contains within the workplace any part of the hazardous chemical that spills or leaks, and any resulting effluent.
Maximum penalty:
(a) in the case of an individual—$6,000, or
(b) in the case of a body corporate—$30,000.

Basically this means that you must be able to prevent spills from leaving your site and this spill kit is ideal.

FAQs

Spill kits often have a range of materials that are made to be compatible with whatever hazard it’s designed to clean up.

Some common items found in spill kits include:

Absorbent materials: to extract the hazard and stop the spill from spreading.
Chemical containers: to house the contents of all the spill kit’s packages.
Waste disposal items: to contain the absorbed spill and discard waste safely.
Clean up tools: brooms or shovels to remove the absorbent.
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment): to protect staff who are cleaning the spill.

Its easy to assume that a single spill kit will be plenty to protect your business from chemical spills. The reality however is that you need to know the type of chemicals you have in your workplace and where the hazards can occur, to place spill kits in the right space.

This means carrying out a dedicated risk assessment to find out what your workplace’s overall safety needs are and how to manage them. This is not as easy to undertake as you’d think, so if you need help with this, contact us at Spill Station and we can help.

Whether you need a general use spill kit, oil and fuel spill kit or chemical spill kit, all comes down to the risk assessment mentioned above. If you require help with risk assessment, Spill Station can help you, but they can also help with sourcing spill kits as they are Australia’s leading spill kit suppliers also.

In order to safeguard the environment, each state in Australia has very specific laws and standards regarding environmental and safety obligations. This indicates that you must have all necessary equipment to effectively respond to spills without jeopardizing worker safety. You may face additional fines or penalties if it is determined that you have broken this rule.

Of course your staff have to be aware on where spill kits, are and how to stock and use them. A spill kit procedure that is concise, easy to understand, and clear should be created and attached to your spill kit. Your staff should have enough direction on how to handle the chemical spill and use the kit from this brief procedure.

As a minimum, you should cover the following points in your training:

  •     Chemical dangers associated with each potential spill
  •     Who should be notified in the event of a chemical spill?
  •     What staff members are responsible for particular clean-up tasks?
  •     How to choose, put on, and remove the proper personal protective equipment?
  •     How to use each item in the spill kit?
  •     Step-by-step clean-up procedures.
  •     Chemical waste disposal procedures.
  •     Reporting of the incident.

Workplace safety isn’t simple, so it’s understandable if you still have questions. Our team of experts at Spill Station are great at providing help to workplaces in terms of risk assessments, safety solutions and education. Just contact us and we’ll see what we can do to help!
