When your workplace stores dangerous goods, it’s important to have dedicated emergency eyewash stations and safety showers to deal with any incidents that may come up. Emergency showers and eyewash stations allow the affected worker to quickly wash away any dangerous chemicals that may come into contact with their face and body as they interact with hazardous materials.

The Australian Standard states that emergency eyewash stations and safety showers must be installed within 10 metres, but no closer than 2m to the location where corrosive substances are used or stored. To help keep your workplace as compliant as possible, Spill Station not only offers these safety showers with eyewash stations combined, but we also offer optional extras that are designed to make using the safety equipment easier for you.

Here’s some of what we offer at Spill Station:

Non-Hazardous Flow Switch

The Hughes Safety H-FSNH25 is a 25mm non-hazardous flow switch that can trigger a local or remote alarm and provide quick first aid to the operator. Other options include audio/visual interference and flanged connectors.

Non-Flameproof Audible Alarm

Hughes Safety H-AUD is activated when showering and/or using an eyewash. The sound alarm is connected to shower and/or eyewash proximity switches and alerts in an emergency situation. Suitable for use in fireproof rooms.

Non-Slip Safety Shower & Eyewash Mat

These mats are made to be used under emergency showers or eyewash stations. They are designed to prevent slips and falls when spaces become slippery. They don’t just keep accident victims from slipping, but also raise them above the overflow area as hazardous chemicals are flushed away.

Thermal Protection Jackets for H-P400

These protection jackets ensure the unit is protected thermally from extreme heat and extreme cold at all times, thus regulating the water temperature and keeping you as compliant as possible.

Wall Mounted Double Cup Optiflex

The Hughes Safety H-OPTI500 is a wall-mounted body, face and eye shower with a 45-degree angled double nozzle. It’s developed to suit extremely hazardous environments. This shower is designed to be used as a first flushing method before getting to a compliant safety unit or can be used when small hazards that don’t need a full unit, arise.

Stainless Steel Shower Rose

The Hughes Safety H-SSR stainless steel shower rose is a great alternative to the standard conical shower nozzle and is also available in yellow ABS plastic H-ABS.

Eyewash Sign Metal Single Sided

Hughes Safety H-SSS is printed in white on a green background. It is double-sided for wall mounting and the safety shower is equipped with clips to attach the label.

According to Australian Standard, this is a compliance requirement for every safety shower/eye wash station.

Non-Chemical Water Treatment Cartridge 2000 Litre

These treatment cartridges will ensure that legionella and other such harmful bacteria don’t grow in your safety shower tank or your tank-fed eye and face wash systems.

Sunshield for 1500 Litre Tank Shower – 3 Sides & Roof

In extremely cold or extremely hot temperatures, tank showers can be equipped with this shade, which will keep the water in the tank at the right temperature.

Safety Shower Sign Metal Double Sided

This safety shower sign is white printed on a vivid green background and is designed to be double-sided for wall mounting, and can also be mounted to the safety shower. These signs are required for full safety shower compliance and are made to last.

Tank Shower Light for Sign Box

These light boxes let the safety signs you use backlit for better visibility when the light is low. This helps you remain fully compliant as showers need to be well lit and signs need to always be visible.

FAQs

These accessories are not always required for compliance, and that’s why their options. They’re essential aspects of eyewash and shower units that can be used to enhance user experience. This includes signage, non-slip mats, valves and sun shields to name a few. When you conduct a workplace audit, you’ll realise if these extras are needed. If you’re struggling to undertake the audit, let us know as we offer this here at Spill Station.

Safety showers are decontamination units made to wash the body of anyone who has been exposed to dangerous substances in a workplace.  The device flushes the individual with a lot of water to remove the debris from their body. The Australian Standard stipulates safety showers in addition to more specific guidelines regarding employee safety. These units are used in laboratories, for example, to prevent injuries, provide sufficient first aid, and protect workers' health and safety.

In short, no there is not. Often these terms are used interchangeably and both refer to a decontamination wash unit for the body. Often emergency shower will be a term seen more in the United States.

Safety showers are essential because they offer immediate decontamination, typically within the first ten to fifteen seconds of exposure to a hazardous substance. The showers make it possible for workers who are exposed to harmful substances to be cleaned up safely before getting secondary aid.

Safety shower equipment can also be used to flush contaminants from clothes or put out fires in clothes.

A chemical is said to be corrosive if it destroys or changes the structure of human tissue at the site of contact (irreversibly) after a certain amount of time has passed.
