What Is a safety shower?

A safety shower is a type of decontamination device designed to wash the body of a person exposed to hazardous substances. The device sprays a large amount of water on the person to flush away the materials from the body. The safety shower is a requirement set by the Australian Government and Worksafe provides more detailed rules and guidelines. Workplaces such as laboratories use these devices to limit injuries, provide appropriate first aid and ensure the health and safety of workers.

What’s the difference between a ‘safety shower’ and an ‘emergency shower’?

Safety showers are rapid irrigation/washing devices designed to contain the aftermath of emergency situations arising from contact with harmful corrosive substances. They are also called emergency showers, and the words emergency shower and safety shower are often used interchangeably.

Why are safety showers important?

Safety showers are important as they provide on-the-spot decontamination, often in the first 10-15 seconds after exposure to a hazardous substance. These showers allow workers who have been exposed to safely wash off hazardous substances that can cause serious injury. These safety showers can also flush contaminants from clothes or extinguish clothing fires. 

For how long should the area be washed after exposure to a hazardous substance?

Although the timeframe may change, a safety shower needs to comply with AS4775, and thus the minimum flow rate must be 75.5L/min for at least 15 minutes. This is a time that may be modified depending on the substance, but the 15-minute time limit is a minimum. 

Is there a specific standard around building safety showers?

Yes there is, and we adhere to it strictly at Spill Station, some of these standards include sturdy valves, a spray nozzle that is made of heavy-duty glass and piping made from stainless steel with modular construction. 

What requirements must a safety shower meet?

According to the AS4775, here are the requirements an onsite safety shower must meet. 

  • Use only tepid water: if your safety shower is outdoors and your water tank is in the sun all day, a scald protection valve may be a good option.
  • Equipment must be tested weekly and inspected and tagged annually for compliance. 
  • Area around the shower unit must be well-illuminated and have appropriate signage. 
  • You must be able to get to the shower unobstructed within 10-15 seconds, and on the same level as the hazard. 
  • The shower valve must go from fully closed to fully open within one second or less and remain open without the use of the users’ hands.

Where should the safety shower be located?

In general, you must be able to get to the safety shower between 10-15 seconds from the hazard. In addition to this, you must not have to climb up or down steps to get to the shower, this means the shower must be on the same level as the hazard. The safety shower must also be in a well-lit area, and well-lit itself, so it can be seen easily. The appropriate signage must also be placed in the appropriate areas. 

Are safety showers required to have drains?

It is important to dispose of wastewater correctly from a safety shower. Although it may not come to mind first, it’s important to consider where the wastewater will go so that it does not create a hazard. It is a good idea to have drains with safety showers to ensure any harmful substance washed off a person does not then create another health or environmental hazard. Gutters can also help prevent the occurrence of wet and slippery surfaces or water damage to the workplace. Additionally, if there is a drain, you can also make sure when testing is done, the water is removed correctly. 

What if we don’t have plumbing for a safety shower?

If your worksite does not have plumed water near your hazards, a portable body wash unit can be supplied, these are known as a drench hose. It is important to note, however, this does not meet Australian standards as they have a limited capacity and only allow for a few minutes of flushing at the prescribed minimum water flow. These units are largely made to give you additional time to get workers to a plumbed and fully compliant safety shower and is not enough to replace them fully. 

How often do safety showers need to be checked?

Each unit needs to be checked weekly, this means turning on the shower for a set amount of time to make sure the plumbing and drainage are all working well. Then, each unit must be tested annually. This is the main way to remain compliant with your testing and maintenance.  

When doing this test, each unit should be tested for wear and tear, each unit should be allowed to run and tested for performance, recording the water flow rate, spray dispersal and temperature as well as checking for any activation issues and other such problems.
