Worksafe recently issued a bulletin on the dangers of eye and skin injuring resulting from the use of cleaning chemicals.

It states that, “Caustic chemicals that are highly alkaline and corrosive are widely used as cleaning agents in industries such as food, hospitality, health and metal cleaning. The most common caustic chemicals are liquids containing either sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide.”

This information sheet made special mention of the use of eyewash bottles stating, “Eyewash bottles must not be used as the primary emergency eyewash facility for a splash of caustic chemicals to the eyes.”

Once the flow of water commences, eyewash facilities must be hands free operation and able to provide 15 minutes of tepid water at the correct flow rate as stated in the Australian Standard.

A full range of compliant plumbed in eyewash units are available from Spill Station® Australia.
